Salisbury Latitude: 39.7534 Longitude: -79.0839
On April 15th, 1775 the town of Salisbury was founded by Joseph Markley, consisting of a tract of land known as "John`s Fancy" named for his father John, who arrived in America from Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany in 1755, and laying claim to the land in 1765 that borders the Casselman River, Meadow Run and Piney Creek, situated just a few miles north of the Maryland and Pennsylvania border. In 1796 the borough of Salisbury was laid out and finally incorporated in 1862.
The official name "Salisbury" is a derivative of the word "salt", which in german/deutsch is "salz" or "sals". It has been said that the earliest settlers called the area "Salsburrich", for the salt deposits found in the area, however some also suspect it may have actually been called "Salzburg" after a town in Austria, having its naming roots for salt deposits as well, where the Salzach River on its western border very much resembles the Salisbury borough`s westernmost border, the Casselman River.
